Bad pun, bad. Sorry, couldn't help myself. :)
My former roommate, Maureen, who is a pastry chef, had made gnocchi from scratch once at our old apartment, and they were so good we couldn't stop eating them. So, I was inspired to try.
The good news is, the whole batch cost 65 cents to make. (2 russet potatoes for 52 cents, and one egg.) And there was an Iron Chef America episode on while the potatoes were baking, and the secret ingredient was fennel!
The bad news is, they turned out more like mashed-potato nuggets than gnocchi.
The other good news is, "mashed-potato nuggets" are hardly a bad thing. Still. Apparently I'm going to need to invest in a Potato Ricer to realize my dreams of being in the Gnocchi Hall of Fame.
Otherwise, it was a parade of left-overs, and I also contributed the remaining green leaf lettuce ($.90) and parmesan cookies ($1.25) from Wednesday.
Starch fest. I'm going to need some protein later. Burger, anyone?
