Renata came over an cooked what she called Pastel, which is a dough she brought from Brazil, and thus pastel is pronounced with an accent. It looked like an empanada, as you can see, but did not taste like one.

They were fried. They were also amazing. The correlation between "fry" and "good" is high. These Pastels had a cherry tomato inside along with some cheese. Yum!

We made together a blended drink of water melon, lemon, mint, and seltzer with a little sugar. Also fantastic. Wait! you say, that does not look like there is watermelon in that blender. It is watermelon- yellow watermelon! It was an accident that we bought a yellow water melon. But we worked with it, and we quite satisfied.
The impetus of Renata's visit to Brooklyn was those green tomatoes from yesterday. So we fried them up in some olive oil. They were first dipped in milk, then matzah meal, egg, and finally corn meal. They were good, but we missed a flavor we remembered from when we ate them in The South, and I'd bet it was lard. Being a good Jewish girl, I don't have lard in my kitchen. So we did what we could and put on some spicy mayo (from my Half King left overs) and a little cheese in an attempt to make up for the absent lard. I was quite satisfied with the results.

R and I went out to walk off all the fry, and like good ladies, we got our nails done. Followed by a trip to Target where I was less than impressed with Ana Sui's collection inspired by Gossip Girl.
When I returned home, I remembered I'm on for the main course tomorrow. So I cook some more. Stay turned: tomorrow you can read about how it turns out.
xoxo
