So, for the past couple of days I've given in to my thai impulses for lunch, but the good news is that I've stockpiled some leftovers that I enjoyed today. So all in all, I'm still thinking frugally as I can when it comes to lunch. I did have a Thai cooking class in the past, so one of these days I'll throw down against Thai takeout, but not until I'm restored to my optimal down-throwing condition.

The chocolate disaster happened after I hobbled (god, I'm milking this, aren't I) the six blocks from the cheapie market to my apartment, weighted down with bags of groceries. (I would have taken a cab, but none are to be found in NYC during rush hour when it's raining.) I've been charged with feeding some troops this weekend for a friend's birthday/housewarming party, and was planning to make some killer brownies that usually call for chocolate cake mix as a base. In an effort to save myself one whole dollar, I hastily grabbed some jiffy brownie mix instead, which did not take as well to the recipe as cake mix does. (Brownies lack in baking soda or something, so they retain their dense, chewiness, and don't rise like cake.) To quote Shane's take on the result, "it's like chocolate bark." Which is, in fact, tasty, but not gonna work out for birthday brownies.
We try again tonight.

Why aren't you calling them by their proper name?....Brownies to Cry For.
ReplyDeleteDear Blog Readers: Yes, in my family these have become known as "Brownies to Cry For," because they are just that good. Friends and coworkers have adopted the PG-rated (some drug reference) "Crack Brownies." Enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI would like to state, for the record, that Pamela's Crack Brownies are AMAZING!!!
